The East Room

The East Room

This 1874 photograph depicts the East Room as it appeared during the wedding of Nellie Grant, President Ulysses S. Grant's daughter, and Algernon Sartoris on May 21, 1874. A platform was built for the ceremony in the East Room. Suspended above was a bell made of pink roses. White House doorman Thomas Pendel recalled, "Palms and other plants were artistically placed around the room, the windows were closed and the room brilliantly lighted. The effect was beautiful in the extreme.”
