The United States Patent Office, 1846

The monumental United States Patent Office built of dressed Aquia stone is seen here as originally completed, about 1846. Subsequent additions would greatly enlarge it. During Polk's time, the building loomed over the small domestic structures lining K Street. The Patent Office, which still stands, reflects public architecture in Europe at the time, mostly Prussia.
